There is systematic LGBTQ erasure from education. This project was created in order to shine a light on the somewhat forgotten historical figures who may have identified as LGBTQ if they were alive today. Oftentimes, when people come out of the closet, they are told that they will not amount to anything simply because of who they are or who they love. The LGBTQ Icons featured in this project are a clear example that LGBTQ people have contributed positively to society in every single discipline throughout history, we were just never taught about them.
The creative direction of LGBTQ ICONS was inspired by the vehemently anti LGBTQ Eastern Orthodox Church, one of the three main branches of Christianity with adherents predominantly located in Eastern Europe and the Middle East. In the Orthodox Church, icons of saints are venerated as holy. On the other hand, LGBTQ people are seen as living in sin and as unholy. By taking back this ancient artform and modifying it for the 21st century, we strive to educate everyone and venerate the LGBTQ Icons which have contributed so much to our society. May they never be forgotten!
